PFAS in the Garden State: A Long History for an Emerging Contaminant

Daniel Millemann, Ph.D.

Research Scientist, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

Dan is a Research Scientist studying ecotoxicology for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Elon University, as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science from Rutgers University with a focus in environmental chemistry. His primary areas of expertise include ecotoxicology, bioaccumulation, & surface water quality. He serves as the Chair of the New Jersey interagency Toxics in Biota Committee and oversees “Fish Smart, Eat Smart”, the New Jersey fish consumption advisory program. He also evaluates various environmental contaminants for risk to ecological & human receptors to support standards development or risk assessments for department programs.

Twenty years of PFAS data in the Delaware River Basin: Just scratching the surfactant

Jeremy Conkle, Ph.D.

Sr. Chemist/Toxicologist, Delaware River Basin Commission

Dr. Conkle is a Senior Chemist and Toxicologist at the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC). He holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Longwood University, an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston, and a Ph.D. in Oceanography & Coastal Sciences from Louisiana State University. He was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Riverside, and an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. His research focuses on contaminants in aquatic systems. At DRBC, he studies emerging contaminants, including PFAS, microplastics, tire wear particles, and 6-PPDq, while also dabbling in water quality policy in the Delaware River Basin. From 2017 to present, he has served as an expert witness in the Wilson v. Formosa Plastics Corporation trial, which led to the largest settlement in a Clean Water Act case involving a private entity. BUT, most importantly, Dr. Conkle is a proud husband and father of two boys.

Director of Production, Middlesex Water Company

Mark Theiler is the Director of Production at Middlesex Water Company, an investor-owned water utility in New Jersey. Mark graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and worked for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection prior to joining Middlesex Water Company in 2016. He also currently serves as a Trustee of the New Jersey Section of AWWA.

The Delran Tour Description:

New Jersey American Waters’ Delaware River Regional Water Treatment Plant treats water drawn from the Delaware River and delivers as much as 40 million gallons of high-quality, reliable water daily to hundreds of thousands of customers in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties. Built in 1996, the plant was created to address the region’s critical water supply needs that could not be met from the aquifers alone. This tour takes attendees through the treatment process and its complexities, aiming to educate individuals about the water treatment process.

Tour Time:

Our tour time varies based on questions and interactions; but a good rule of thumb is anywhere between one and two hours.
