Addressing Harmful Algal Blooms in Drinking and Recreation Waters

This presentation will review the recent USEPA guidance pertaining to cyanotoxins in both drinking water reservoirs and recreational lakes, discuss the difficulties of combating cyanobacteria blooms, and demonstrate the application of Princeton Hydro’s PARE program in the detection, management and minimization of cyanobacteria blooms and cyanotoxin risks.

Bio: Dr. Souza is a founding partner of Princeton Hydro, LLC, a science, engineering, and design firm focused on water resources in the New England and Mid-Atlantic Region. His comprehensive experience in water resource protection and restoration includes the preparation of management and guidance plans for over 300 lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. He has also been extensively involved in the promotion and application of green infrastructure stormwater management techniques and the study of climate change related impacts on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems.  Steve is an adjunct professor at Temple University and conducts courses on a variety of water resource related topics for both Rutgers Office of Continuing Education and Montclair University.  Dr. Souza is the 2012 recipient of the AWRA NJ Chapter’s Peter Homack Award.
