Phase 2 of the Delaware River Basin Watershed Initiative: Better Science and Projects, New Tools and Maps

Abstract: The Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) is now in its fourth year and preparing for 3 – 6 more years.  In NJ it covers areas in the northwest corner, NJ Highlands, Pinelands and Delaware Bayshore. The goal of the Initiative is to develop “watersheds that provide clean water in sufficient quantity to support healthy ecosystems and human communities”.  It involves 50 NGOs working in areas impacted by agriculture and suburban stormwater runoff and areas of high water quality threatened with forest loss or fragmentation. To date over 13,000 acres of forest have been preserved and over 6,000 acres of agricultural and suburban lands have been restored across the basin. This presentation will address lessons learned from Phase 1, status of research grants, new mapping tools including the Stream Reach Assessment Tool (SRAT) and programs forecasting future development patterns. Whether you live or work inside or outside the DRWI areas of concern, there will be information that you can use in your watersheds.

Bio: Ms. Carol Collier serves as senior advisor and government liaison at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. For the DWRI, she works on internal strategy teams and with outside organizations and agencies. Ms. Collier also serves as the Director of the Environmental Studies and Sustainability Program at Drexel University, as well as advising on the watershed management and development of more resilient systems for an uncertain future throughout the nation and the world. Ms. Collier is on the Boards of the PA Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, The Pinchot Institute for Conservation, The Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin and the One Water Council of the US Water Alliance. She also is a current NJ-AWRA member, and served as president of National AWRA in 2013.
