Holistic Watershed Restoration for flood control, improved
water quality and aquatic ecosystem resilience
Presented by Melinda Daniels, PhD, Stroud Water Research Center
Located in Avondale, PA, the Stroud Water Research Center has been leading the effort to produce innovative solutions for preserving and restoring fresh water since its founding in 1967. Dr. Daniels focuses broadly on the fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, and stream ecosystem ecology of both “natural” and human-modified river systems from reach to watershed scales. These interests include fields such as river restoration, watershed management, and stream ecosystem science. Though much of it is theoretically based, her research is placed within the context of better understanding human impact on rivers, improving the management of rivers, and enabling the successful restoration of rivers. This includes the examination of how people perceive river environments and the process of communicating science to river managers and stakeholders. Essentially, her research perspective examines rivers as coupled human and natural systems.
